Our Story

Equipping creative talent for sustainable careers

SKB is a creative economy workforce development platform based in the Kenyan coast that identifies high-potential youth talent, equips them with professional and business skills, and connects them to income-generating opportunities through structured incubation and market access.

SKB is addressing the challenge of youth unemployment, which remains a significant economic problem in Mombasa and across Kenya. While many young people possess creative talent with
Economic potential: most lack access to the structured training, industry networks, and market platforms required to convert that talent into sustainable livelihoods. As a result, creative activity
often remains informal and under-monetized.

Since 2023, SKB has been working with musicians, rappers, poets, dancers and visual artists across Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale and Taita Taveta to help them move from informal creative activity
into professional participation in the creative economy. Our work combines grassroots talent identification, professional development and live performance platforms that help artists build
portfolios, audiences, and income-generating opportunities.

The Goal

Our Mission

Equipping Creative Youth for Economic Participation

To equip creative youth with the skills, mindset, and opportunities to build sustainable livelihoods, participate meaningfully in the economy, and realize their full potential.

We achieve this by providing structured programs that combine professional development, mentorship, business literacy, and market access.

The Outlook

Our Vision

An Africa where it is normal, viable and sustainable for creative talent
to earn a dignified living from their art.

Our Core Values

Principles That Guide Our Work

Stewardship and Purpose

We believe our talents are gifts entrusted to us by God. You must use your talent, role and opportunities faithfully, diligently and for good purpose. You must also help others put their talents to work in ways that build dignity, livelihood and purpose.

Economic Empowerment

We prioritize real economic opportunity for youth by transforming creative talent into viable sources of income and employment.

Professionalism

We promote discipline, accountability, and excellence within creative work, helping young artists build credible and respected careers.

Dignity and Agency

We believe young people should have the power to shape their own economic futures and pursue opportunities that reflect their passions and abilities.

Inclusion

We intentionally create opportunities for youth who are often excluded from traditional economic pathways.

Integrity

Transparency, accountability, and responsible partnerships guide our operations and relationships with participants and stakeholders.

Innovation

We apply creative and forward-thinking solutions to address youth unemployment and economic vulnerability.

The Challenge We Address

Youth Unemployment and Underemployment

Across many African communities, young people face structural barriers that limit their ability to participate meaningfully in the economy. These challenges include:

Youth Unemployment and Underemployment

Millions of young people possess talent but lack access to structured opportunities that enable them to build sustainable livelihoods.

Knowledge Poverty and Employability Gaps

Despite increased school enrolment, many young people lack access to quality education, vocational training, and practical skills development. Limited access to technical and vocational education further restricts economic mobility.

The Digital Divide

Access to digital knowledge and technology remains uneven, preventing many youth from fully participating in the digital and knowledge-based economy.

Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing

Economic uncertainty and limited opportunities contribute to psychosocial stress and reduced long-term optimism among young people.

Lack of Commercialisation Systems

Talented youth often lack the systems, mentorship, and industry connections needed to transform creativity into sustainable income.

Our Theory of Change

If underserved creatives are equipped with technical, legal, and behavioral business training,
supported through coaching and market access,
then they will better overcome setbacks and plan better for opportunities and long-term,
because they will have the right mindset, knowledge, tools, and exposure needed to
monetize their talent and contribute to local economies.

  • Some Key Assumptions

1. There is viable but underdeveloped demand for creative goods and services

2. Combining technical, legal, behavioural, and business support improves the chances of
income generation more than isolated interventions;

3. Participants will attend and engage more consistently when training is linked to
practical opportunities such as rehearsals, showcases, and visibility, rather than being
offered as stand-alone classroom sessions

4. Participants who complete the programme will apply what they learn in practice.
including planning, rehearsal discipline, audience development, and basic business
formalization

5. Basic proficiency, professionalism, and consistency are enough to improve participantsโ€™
competitiveness for entry-level paid gigs, collaborations, and commissions

6. Better content quality and more consistent output will improve the chances of audience
growth and paid opportunities over time.

7. Increased public performance and digital publication will improve confidence.
portfolios, and discoverability.

8. Teachers and community-based coaches who are trained will continue transferring skills
beyond SKB events, extending program reach.

9. Sufficient funding is available to sustain programming long enough for behaviour
change and market outcomes to emerge
